Library mission
The mission of the Melvin J. Zahnow Library is to provide information resources and services that support the teaching and research needs of the students, faculty and staff of Saginaw Valley State University
AY 2016-2017 Library Goals & Objectives
- Demonstrate the value of the academic library on student learning, retention and success
- Target selected at risk student groups and offer them a range of library services for academic and social support
- Develop a Research Services Strategic Plan that focuses on improving student success and promoting library value
- Pursue the implementation and participation in a student ID card swipe system
- Educate students and other library users to discover, access, evaluate and use information efficiently and effectively for scholarly and lifelong learning needs
- Create and pilot new library instruction session for English 111 courses that are based on student learning outcomes that relate to ACRL Information Literacy Standards/Guidelines.
- Communicate and interact with students, faculty and the greater community to increase awareness and use of library resources and services
- Develop guidelines for subject liaisons to collaborate with faculty to improve collections and research assistance
- Update current online tutorials and create new tutorials
- Create and maintain a library blog
- Develop a marketing plan
- Evaluate, strengthen and manage access to library collections and resources to meet the information needs of the university community
- Analyze current collection development model and identify new models for acquisitions funding
- Continue Reference Collection refresh with the purchase of new resources
- Promote innovation through professional development and continuing education of library staff
- Continue updating job titles and descriptions for selected positions within Research Services
- Identify and participate in national and state continuing education opportunities
- Maintain an inviting physical environment that facilitates learning and social interaction
- Transitions Reference Collection area to Reference Reading Room
- Work with WTA (architects) to select appropriate library furniture

- Demonstrate the value of the academic library on student learning, retention and success
- Develop eZahnow as an institutional repository by making public the Follett Papers and issue level access to archived University Publications
- Communicate and interact with students, faculty and the greater community to increase awareness and use of library resources and services
- Support management of e-resource subscriptions using the Electronic Rights Management System. Embedded in this will be the ability to provide evaluative information to inform renewal decisions
- Evaluate, strengthen and manage access to library collections and resources to meet the information needs of the university community
- Support the Library infrastructure by updating our LibGuide system and providing enhanced data analytics especially in support of resource selection.
- Promote innovation through professional development and continuing education of library staff
- Clarify the virtual public interface to Library services and resources through consistent branding and minimizing transitions from one system to another.
- Maintain an inviting physical environment that facilitates learning and social interaction
- Design and implement library stacks arrangement to maximize space, collaborate work areas (3rd floor) and quiet study areas (4th floor)

- Examples include facilitating browsability, supporting collection rejuvenation efforts
Departmental Objectives
- Sync liaison areas (Sierra SCAT table, subject areas, ILLiad profiles) so that library systems are better poised to support "super" liaison work
- Invest in SVSU people, climate and culture through participation of University training and collaborative efforts
